Cleaning out storage boxes of crafts put away during the last move – years ago. I know why some were never finished. Not at all attractive, too hard to make, or changed the decor. Did we really think those colors were attractive. (Fill in the date. It doesn’t matter which as every decade had horrible colors and combinations)
Aw, Lupin looks so happy in his swing. She should just use it for a cat toy. Love Puck’s commentary, and yes Marilyn, perhaps we should worry a bit about Burt’s skills here. ;)
Oh, woman. Don’t buy macramé at a craft store. Buy cotton or jute cord and beads and tie your own plant hangers. Or even better, buy Sculpey and make your own beads. It’s really easy. If you can tie a child’s sneakers, you can do macramé!
Oh, woman, I understand completely. Between the books, yarn, fabric and jewelry making supplies there’s barely room to walk in my living room, dining room and sewing/computer room. And then there’s the excess yarn in the guest room but at least it’s out of my way. Remember, “She who dies with the most crafting supplies wins.” Keep me away from Hobby Lobby and Michael’s Crafts!
The only thing I ever made from a craft store was a picture frame made out of bamboo and tied with sisal twine. It looks better than the painting I did that I was trying to frame…
As a child, I always had crayons, colored pencils, water color paints and every color of construction paper ever made. I had severel Jon Gnagy drawing kits and paint by number sets. I think my first woven craft was a potholder loom I got as a Christmas present in my early years. I eventually got a miniature loom. Over the years I’ve been taught or taught myself to embroider, crochet, knit, sew, and macramé. When I was a title one reading teacher, I sponsored an after school book club where I read a book to the little ones and then we did some sort of artwork or paper craft related to the book.
I started doing pour paintings when Covid was in it’s sixth month. I was not able to leave house except for post office. My daughter would do our shopping. I watched YouTube videos and got the basic supplies. I poured and felt calm, joy and even artistic. When I was finally able to see my friends again last September I gave most of my paintings away and donated the rest. I then started a new batch but was more careful in my color choices. But slowly another batch grows and have no idea what to do with them all as love to create but don’t have a clue what to do with them all. Don’t want to ask friends to take more. Any suggestions?
I’m not a craft person at all. Glue is not my friend. However, I got bored about 3 yrs ago and thought I’d try to make a quilt. With a lot of help from Alanda Craft on youtube and the wonderful ladies at my favorite quilt shop, I’ve gotten pretty good, if I do say so myself.
I’ve watched youtube vids on vintage journaling and I don’t understand it. I thought journaling was putting togetheryour own life experiences or those of friends and family. These people (and as far as I can tell, they’re all women) buy paper, pictures, tags, etc and paste them in books. Could somebody explain that to me? I don’t ask to be mean, I really don’t understand it.
I love good craft and fabric stores. I CAN always find something I need. A wise quilter once said to buy fabric not for a project, but because you like it and then you’ll find a project for it. This is also how I shop for card making supplies. Paper, ink, fabric and cats. Got it covered. My three black cats all love fabric and “helping” me sew. Cat fur is fiber.
Has that mug always had google eyes? Between the beads, eyes, and the fantastic new swing, it looks like Lupin’s having a great day. The most impressive part might be Burt getting his paws on a store’s security footage.
Must…Resist…The…Lure…Of…Macrame… I did a lot in the past, I’d love to take it up again, but I have diamond dots, knitting for the new great-granddaughter, and cross stitch (2) projects on the go, and a new project has been added to my to do list. And I bought plants yesterday for the flower garden. I have enough to keep me busy until I die!
I like craft stores. I never buy anything there. My dad was in the dime store business. The high counters and the smell of excelsior remind me of the places where I spent so much time when I was a kid. In the last store he had there was a craft aisle. We sold a lot of resin stuff and fake flowers. Yardage, patterns, yarn, and sewing notions too. I don’t where the excelsior smell in craft stores comes from, maybe raffia or twine. Packaging materials have evolved.
Well I’d buy the giant rose… and a great pen… ok I admit it, maybe the sign too. I’m late this morning so I’m sure it’s already been said, but Squeee! In Your Face In The Air Rear Toe Beans!!
I have the same problem with art/stationery stores.
I cannot resist a package of technical pens in multiple widths at 25% off. I have unused sketchbooks from 1985. It took 20 years to use up a ream package of magenta paper.
I have a collection of ball point pens in case I ever have to write a ransom note, whose ink can only be traced to the Twentieth Century.
I buy fat, felt-tip markers in eight shades of gray. In my desk drawer, there are tubes of watercolors in colors that don’t exist anymore (something about toxicity).
Those paper cones for smudging pencil and charcoal – don’t get me started on smudging cones.
When full sheets of multi-colored crepe paper went on sale, I bought enough to put a hanging rainbow of colors on my ceiling.
Pencils in every hardness and softness, charcoal sticks, Conte colors, sharpeners, pointers, scrapers, gum erasers, gum arabic…
I live in a state where a well-known arts and crafts company is headquartered. When I order things from them it’s because I’m supporting business in my state.
I also order a number of craft supplies for kids to be auctioned at my church’s annual mission auction. It never fails to bring in a good amount and maybe inspires a kid’s creativity.
I was going to make a joke about people who buy things when they know they’ll never get around to using them just because they’re on sale… and then I remembered the dozens upon dozens of games I’ve bought on sale and subsequently never got around to playing.
As far back in time as Ancient Egypt Elvis-Anum couldn’t wait to get his paws on the latest office supply scroll delivered by the mythical Papyrus Cat.
I was once assigned to write a piece about fly tying, something I’m very familiar with from my dad’s longrunning home business (everything I know about running one, I learned in my dad’s basement when I was five). I assumed for the purpose of the article that the fly tyer was an older married man, and led off with how creating beautiful fishing flies hooks (ha) you like dope, you accumulate hardware, construct more cabinets and shelves to hold all the little beads, threads, chenille, pipe cleaners, gems and wires and they are everywhere. Over time the fly tyer begins accompanying his loved one on pilgrimage to the holy sacred craft store (just like Georgia says here, like a salmon returning to that one stream where they were born) to get More Stuff To Make Stuff With. “But it was on sale and practically free!” I never finished this thing, I’ve got it someplace.
It’s a little late in the day, so I may post this tonight as well: Georgia made a series of tweets on May 11 that is worth reading. The content is not suitable for here, nor did she choose to put that content here, but it is very important somber stuff. If you don’t do Twitter, try googling Twitter Georgia Dunn. It begins with Thank you…

When the sun shines through the window
And Lupin’s having fun
It’s a new day
It’s a new way
As he flies close to the sun
He can swing in morning sunlight
He can feel the macramé
He can’t hear the Woman calling
So no one can stop his play
Un gatito blanco
He’s like a bird in the sky
Un gatito blanco
Over the squished plants he’ll fly
No one can take his freedom away

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Puckmosis: It’s really late. I think we should rest here and continue our exploration tomorrow.
Lupinium: Alright. I’ll just do my nightly exercises first.
Lupinium finishes with his nightly Thwump
The next morning
Beatrixia: Does anyone else smell bacon cooking?
Adobe Style: Not only that, I think someone is making acorn cereal.
Ta-Natash: I’ll bet there’s cheesy casserole as well.
Violet-Ifa: I think the scents are coming from straight ahead. Shall we proceed?
Beatrixia: Good idea.
Enter a kitchen with a cooking crew supervised by a grizzled but hale chef
Chef: Welcome, friends. Come and join us for breakfast!
Lupinium: Don’t mind if we do.
Iron Glove: I think some of these utensils were made by my great-grandfather.
Adobe Style: And I recognize some of the table cloths from my family’s creations.
Chef: That’s quite possible. I’ve been here a long time.
Beatrixia: Then you must be…
Chef: Floofnet the Joyous at your service!
