A college roommate I had said his family gave a surprise birthday party for his grandmother when she hit some landmark age (90?). When she walked in the door they turned on the lights and yelled surprise. She had a heart attack and died.
Strangely, some of life’s eras seem to sneak up on you. The Stranger In the Mirror Realization. Sounds like a Big Bang Theory episode. Or one of Dave Barry’s rock bands. Senior edition.

There are times when denial is good. Remember, getting old just happens, growing up is optional.

Outcome rests on how she sees reaching 50. Denial is not unusual.

My chief regret about my birthday coming up this Sunday is that I will no longer be able to call myself a sexagenarian.

OK, let me rephrase: We’re going to have a surprise party in honor of Liz’s 50 birthday.

That’s what happened when I turned 70.
