Tracy has his cybercrime expert, Brock, on the job. I don’t remember ever seeing him before, so I think he might be new. Apparently, the printout contained a log, which I guess is reasonable. A few of us already figured out that the FDIC will have to be informed very soon. I guess the law came into effect at the beginning of June, according to what “Tarry” was telling us.
I wonder why all the little local banks in the U.S. have names like “Federalist.” I’m not used to that system. Until recently, there were really only five chartered banks in Canada.
You mean they can’t yet tell the money went out through an ATM draw ? That Memory is sure one slick “customer”. The bank people got caught up in Comments.
Robbing is when you take money by force with the use of a weapon. Burglary is when you enter the premises without permission and take the money. Theft is when you steal the money when no one’s looking. These guys got hacked, and they don’t even know what terminology to apply. Such hacks.
Weak plot device. It should be completely obvious the method of the theft, at least as far as the point of removal of the funds: the ATM. This wasn’t a cyber theft, i.e., not done by moving numbers in electronic files- it was a physical removal of cash.
i don’t think Mr Memory was just taking cash from the ATM. For this to be a breach the size they’re talking about; the ATM was an access point. Once he’d breached the systems a virus could eliminate the memories of multiple computers. Perhaps he just “altered” the memory of the computers, eliminating lots of assets, without the need for any physical cash.
Is this connected to the ATM thefts? Or some kind of fraud/embezzelment? If it is the ATM all there would be is a record of seemingly legitimate withdrawals.
A printed log? Certainly a digital log would have been easier to acquire. Making a thumb drive with the information would have been quicker and more discreet. If nobody at the bank noticed CK standing at the office printer printing out the spreasheets, it is no wonder they didn’t notice the assets missing.
I wish Mike could have been a little clearer as to whether the crime they’re investigation was Mr. Memory’s ATM robberies or a separate hacking attempt. Just saying.
At this point, I dare say The Federalist Bank’s executives are all so scared they need a change of underwear. But Brock the Cyber Sleuth (who does seem so realistic that he must be based on someone known to Mike and/or Shelley) has clued in Tracy on what’s gone down, if not how it was done, and we can be sure the bank boys will regret failing to comply with FDIC regulations, not to mention the inevitable bad press once Wendy Wichel gets a hold of this! Mr. Memory must be rolling in dough (even if so far only virtually), for, as I’ve said before, half of the bank’s liquid assets must number (conservatively) tens of millions of dollars!

Aha, so the envelope didn’t contain paper at all, it contained a log! (Although I’m at a loss as to how it fit in there and appeared so flat.)

A bank of doubtful ethics?
And Blackjack still at large somewhere!!
My major complaint about the strip today is that it is seldom EDUCATIONAL,as it was during Gould’s era.
When was the last time we saw bloody fingerprints taken from a car trunk by “the wet film process”?
Or the Oodles story, which was “CSI Forensics” way before the term was coined?

Brock: The sperm bank was robbed. Determining the method of theft will take time.
Tracy: Well the answer had better be coming quick!
