I kinda think Caulfield doesn’t mind being told to read so much as he dislikes being told what to read.
And, as for many of us oldsters like Mrs. Olsen, our comfort zones are narrow and set like concrete from constant repetition. Breaking the mold can range from simply bothersome to outright damaging to the psyche. Depends on the habit and the reason for the change.
I grok this. The more that people tell me how great a book or movie or TV show is, the more disappointed I’ll be when I finally read or see it: even if it’s pretty good, it won’t match the expectations the raves have created.
On the other hand, “I think you’d like this” is a reasonable recommendation.
