GREAT commentary on a modern cultural phenomena. And pointing out that it’s like a lot of internet-based things: overall a great thing, but riddled with problems.
When I started buying stuff from individuals on eBay, I was fine to leave them feedback. But when people made it into a regular business, it seemed needless, like leaving feedback after shopping at the grocery store.
Here’s the really relevant point, and why eBay pushes you for reviews good or bad.
If one has a good experience with a seller (online or otherwise), hotel, restaurant, etc., they MIGHT tell someone else about it. If asked.
If they have a BAD experience, they will rush to every possible review site to trash the seller.
This syndrome, combined with fake positive reviews from associates, has made reviews at sites like Yelp, Travelocity, lodging booking sites, etc. increasingly virtually useless.
I’ve had antique glass dishes sent to me shoved in a plastic padded envelope, no wrapping; they arrived shattered, of course. And I’ve had antiques sent to me lovingly wrapped in a box inside another box—they probably would survive a field goal kick or impact with a speeding car. The ignoramuses need to be taken to task; the careful packers deserve the credit.

Wouldn’t that depend on the quality of the purchase?
And what about all of the people who post false feedback?

Too many people want feedback. I knew the devil must be involved somehow.

I always thought EBay sellers wanted money… I wasn’t aware that they required praise, too.
So I don’t have anything funny to say, so I’ll just repeat yesterday’s. “So this Rabbit walks into a Vegetable Bar…”
M’eh… still not that funny… unless you’re a carrot or sump’n… then you’d be rolling on the floor.

Wow. Mr McPherson came back for just a day, then back to R&R. Good for you Mr McP, adequate R&R is very important in life.

On Amazon you have to make a certain number of purchases a year to be allowed to leave feedback. Does eBay do it differently?

I think they should also create a h*e*l*l for those pushing customer service surveys and one for fake car warranty expirations too!
