TMQ from 1950: “The State Department is infested with communists. I have here in my hand a list of 205 — a list of names that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the State Department.”
Gotta agree with the sentiment. After a certain age and enough experience, one can separate the possible and the likely from their opposites and find a bit of peace in the summing up.
Huh. I always thought That McCarthy Quote was “I have here in my hand a list of thirty-eight card-carrying Communists working in the State Department.”
Thank you for slipping in a plug for reading material from time to time ! I ordered a McCarthy book on your suggestion….hope it doesn’t lead to depression, alcoholism and suicide as some reviewers have suggested it might !

Don’t know for certain which book he is referencing, but I’d guess “No Country for Old Men”

Repeated aggravation becomes a problem… In fact, it’s pretty much what drives most inventions. Certainly drives the programming I do for myself.

That’s just the Serenity Prayer rephrased for rednecks, in the same way that “carpe diem” was dumbed down into YOLO.

I am always looking for something to read, so (after a previous mention in this strip), I tried Cormac McCarthy.
All I recall about it is that he one of the worst writers I’ve tried to read.

After seeing “The Road”, I’ve got little use for Cormac McCarthy. Some of the DUMBEST post-apocalypse survivors ever come out of that tripe.

Here is another quote ( I think from a former British PM) A change of nuisances can be like a vacation.
