if Calvin’s mood worsens after reading the book and eating the crackers, Mom will hand him the vacuum with which to suck up the crackers’ crumbs on, between, and under the sofa’s cushions
My mom would have gone off on a 15 minute rant about how much worse she felt, and all the reasons it was our fault. By the time I was Calvin’s age I learned never to complain, or even say I was in a good mood or had slept well. Either way it was rant city.
This is the one I have been predicting for about three weeks now. Whenever someone has commented on how mean Calvin’s Mom can be to him, I’ve been replying that there was one coming up which shows how nice she can be to him.
Another example of Mom being really nice to Calvin was one from early 1990 where Calvin and Hobbes had been playing in the snow and came indoors and Calvin’s Mom presented them with a cup of hot chocolate each. She saw Hobbes as a doll, of course, but still presented him with a cup of hot chocolate. Calvin said, “No one knows how to pamper like a Mom.” Hobbes replied, “How come she put more marshmallows in your hot chocolate than in mine?”
Is this the strip you were talking about earlier?? The one where Mom is extra nice to Calvin?? Well, I reckon that Mom is in a good mood today. It’s just up to us to figure out why.
The idle thought crossed my frontal lobes that dad might have used the same strategy with her (with various modifications, of course). In the next firing of my synapses, I envisioned mom’s reaction:
While this may work on young boys, I’ve never seen it make the slightest difference in an adult woman. Women grump when it’s grumping time and there is nothing you can do about it. (Men may well be the same way. I don’t know.)
What we don’t know, though his mom might, is why Calvin is in a bad mood. Mine could almost always tell if my mood was bad for a valid reason or if I was just trying for attention.

Good thing Mom is home. Dad would trade him in for a weiner dog.

Pretty sure Calvin only pretends to be in a bad mood so he can get free attention.
I love how in the final panel, the comic book obscures his face so you can’t tell if he’s smiling or still frowning.

I’m surprised Calvin didn’t demand cookies instead.

Is Calvin related to Alice by any chance (Alice from cul de sac)?
