Oh, and to continue answering Robin’s question from yesterday, in addition to studs with drywall and/or plaster, a do-it-yourselfer might just plaster over a door without even bothering to remove the handle!

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Queen Catshepsut the Golden: So you’ve possibly found a room behind a wall at the Very Good Pyramid.

Wally: Yes, Your Majesty. There was my family’s hieroglyph on a hollow-sounding wall.

The Queen: And what do you believe is behind that wall?

Puckmosis: Possibly a collection of scrolls, Your Majesty. Or maybe more treasure.

The Queen: The Artists can always use more gold and jewels for their crafts. It may be worthwhile for Burt-Ra’s team to see what’s behind that wall. I understand you also found a Kitten’s Room at the pyramid.

Beatrixia: Yes, Your Majesty. With tons of classic scrolls.

The Queen: Since the Very Good Pyramid is not too far from here, it may be worthwhile to re-open the library. Incidentally, where’s Elvis-Anum?

Puckmosis: He’s studying some scrolls he borrowed.

    Enter Elvis-Anum

Elvis: Your Majesty, I must finish copying Paddle to the Nile and Make Way for Kittens within four weeks.

    The Queen Why is that?

Elvis That’s when the scrolls are due back

Must have been a very thing, flat door knob, to have been plastered over with no telltale bulge. And, yes, I AM a sick puppy. I can envision my Yeti character from DICK TRACY inside, having found a new hideout after that humiliating affair in the sewers.

Lots of comments about the door knob. Here is a first hand account from Maizing earlier in the comments:

“It looks to me as if the knob was removed from the door before it was plastered over. I have a door that has the knob removed. It has a large, round plate fastened over both sides of the hole where the knob had been.”

My thought was that even so you would still need a pretty good coat of plaster to cover the knob-less door plate. But old houses have uneven areas all over so who would really notice a lumpy plaster wall, especially if there is furniture in front of it.

Bonus Meanwhile Back on the Nile

Puckmosis: Welcome to another game of Let’s Make a Mutually Agreeable Pact! Our first contestant is Tabith-Isis. Do you want this box of Red Dots or what’s behind Door Number 1?

    Tabith-Isis: Oh, definitely the box!

Puckmosis: Great choice! Figs, will you show us what’s behind Door Number 1?

Serfig-Aro: Here it is. A pile of used papyrus.

Tabith-Isis: Oh, Elvis would have like to pick that!

Puckmosis: And speaking of Elvis, he is our next contestant. Elvis, would you like this impossibly tiny sleeping box, or what’s behind Door Number 2?

Elvis: I need a sleeping box. I’ll take it.

Puckmosis: Figs, would you show us what’s behind Door Number 2?

Serfig-Aro: Elvis, you would have received a bunch of used tea bags.

Elvis-Anum: Which reminds me. It’s time for tea and scones. See you later.

Puckmosis: And now for our last contestant, Ta-Natash! Tash, do you want this wheel of cheese, or what’s behind Door Number 3?

Tash: Of course, the cheese. I already know what’s behind Door Number 3. But I’ll never tell!

Will the man and The Intruder be able to finally consummate their illicit love affair?

Will the truth come out that the Big Pink House is actually the Bates House and that Winifred Quinn was actually Norma Bates?

I know next to nothing about construction, so this might not be possible, but I was wondering if when they made the house into apartments they covered the wall with drywall and the door was inset from the wall so the door knob wasn’t in the way.

OT – I am a longtime reader, first time commenter. I feel the need today as I had to have my cat Fearless put to sleep this morning – she was 13 years old, and I had her for her last 8 years. When I woke up this morning, she was not doing her normal routine, including waking me up, and was very lethargic. I took her to the emergency vet and basically the tests they were able to do did not turn out well, and to keep here around would have involved long-term care and at least 1 blood transfusion, of which I did not want to put her through any pain and discomfort. This is the hardest thing I have had to do, and I know from reading the comments over the years that you do to. Thank you for your time and make sure to give your fur babies a hug!

About the doorknob, frame, etc: I have seen this done. Drywall is laid flush with the door frame, both inside the frame and out. In this case, it looks as if joint tape wasn’t used, just joint compound. Thus, driving the nail caused cracking that followed the outline of the door. That the drywall was cracked where the doorknob is may be just serendipity, or it’s possible that it was cracked there during installation. (Measure with micrometer. Cut with ax. Beat into place.)

“There are times when we can feel destiny close around us like a fist around a doorknob. Sure, we can resist. But a knob that won’t turn, a door that sticks and never budges, is a nuisance to the gods. The gods may kick in the jamb. Worse, they may walk away in disgust, leaving us to hang dumbly from our tight hinges, deprived of any other chance in life to swing open into unnecessary risk and thus into enchantment.”

    —Tom Robbins

Why is a door-knob deader than anything else?
