I was at a Faith in Action (fia-sgp.org) assistance event today and along with the usual free sandwiches and water, they had “build your own doughnuts.” (I didn’t get one though. Maybe next time.)
We have a marshmallow (white and fluffy), a toasted marshmallow (medium fluffy tortie), a cinnamon roll (orange tabby), and a cookies n cream (tuxedo).
My favorite donut is the Voodoo Doll, which is raised yeasted, filled with raspberry jelly, topped with chocolate frosting, and has a pretzel stick stake driven through its heart. It has everything I love about a good donut, plus macabre sense of humor.
What really got the geniuses at that shop in trouble was a mind-boggling weird donut coated in cough syrup, with a capful of Nyquil nested in the hole. The FDA tends to frown upon unsanctioned medicinal pastries …
Awwwww!! This strip fills me with so much nostalgia! My Daddy used to surprise us with donuts, Mexican pasties called empanadas, little gingerbreads in the shape of pigs, sugar buns, etc. They were the highlight of the day. ❤️
I am guessing “covered with glue” is a glazed donut. Which now that I think about it, most of them have that thinned out, dipped in Elmer’s glue that dried look to them! I think spiky donuts are my favorite, if that is the toasted coconut. As a kid, I loved dusty donuts. Now, not so much.
The strip is adorable even though I’m not really a fan of doughnuts. I mean, if someone brings a box to the office, I’ll eat one (assuming I can score either a chocolate coated or maple flavored one) but I’d never go out and buy them. And I have to say that after all the hype I heard about Krispy Kreme before we got one here in our city, I finally got one and I wasn’t impressed at all. They’re really not any better or worse than any other doughnut I’ve had. I think they’re perfectly ordinary. If I’m going to have a pastry of this type I prefer chocolate eclairs or cream puffs.
In my are we have Mud Pies, Long Johns and Sugar twists. Al of them the dough is deep fried. Mud pies are round with cinnamon in the dough. Covered with chocolate frosting. Long Johns are rectangular and covered with white frosting. And the twists are long strips of dough twisted together then rolled in sugar after frying. My fave are the mud pies.
I didn’t think cats are responsive to sweetness. Maybe there’s enough fatty matter in the icing to get them going, but in my experience with “iced” doughnuts is that the icing isn’t very fatty, either. Certainly not buttery.
I don’t know if my fuzzy butts like donuts because I don’t buy them. His Majesty does love Ensure though. Whenever I crack open a bottle I have to put a few drops in the lid for him or he’ll try to steal the entire bottle from me. Flavor doesn’t matter he just wants Ensure. If I don’t drink it quick I end up fighting for it.
sorry need to rant….I received my Sunday STL Post Dispatch and can’t believe how Lee Enterprises destroyed the comic page. (Several of us have discussed this in earlier arcs.) I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. They removed most of the good comics, and to make you feel like you are getting more they printed the comes extra large. Argyle Sweater, a one panel comic stretches the width of the page! They inserted other comics I’ve never even heard of and they are not very good. They did remove BCN which is just downright wrong. Sorry for the rant. I hope everyone has a great day today.
The cinnamon roll is the King/Queen of Donuts. The twist is the Princess/Prince. Then there’s the Tiger Tail. There was a donut shop in Berkeley called King Pin Donuts that made a raised chocolate like nothing I’ve seen elsewhere. It had a pronounced chocolate flavor that was as good or better than the frosting. Sadly it’s gone after a stellar 30 plus year run.
I’m relieved once again. My neighbors’ Tuxedo was outside this morning. On the other cat’s porch. The other cat didn’t seem to want to share and was out in the yard.
I’m not reading 273 comments to find out, but as I recall there were comments last week about standardized daily comics. Today I found the Sunday ones have been too. I lost one that isn’t online but for now it’s in another paper that so far hasn’t gone through this.
Does anybody remember the short story about Homer Price and ""The Doughnuts" by Robert McCloskey? It was in Worlds of Adventure, a 7th grade reading anthology. It’s also in a short story collection Homer Price(Homer Price #1) by Robert McCloskey
It’s about one of those robot doughnut makers you used to find at lunch counters in dime stores like McCrory’s. Somehow, a diamond bracelet gets cooked into one of the doughnuts. Here’s how the machine worked:
“Homer got down from the chair and pushed a button on the machine marked, “start”. Rings of batter started dropping into the hot fat. After a ring of batter was cooked on one side, an automatic gadget turned it over and the other side would cook. Then another automatic gadget gave the doughnut a little push and it rolled neatly down a little chute, all ready to eat.”
I bought my last Post-Dispatch until this travesty Lee Enterprises has created is reversed. Even in their Sunday comics, no BCN, no Mutts, Mark Trail, Other Coast, Ziggy, Non Sequitur, Zits, all odf them are gone. The paper is getting lots of negative letters, but I doubt they will do any good. 2 other nearby papers are also owned by Lee Enterprises and their comics have all changed now too. This means WAR!!

Donuts – the meal without (Hair)reason:
Creamy ones and covered in glue, oh gawd,
Spiky, dusty, muck-filled and curly what not
Pumpkin rind, yes, you know cat news is good news
But you know they’ll make you all laugh out
After they leave you baffled
Cool chocolate and a nice cinnamon
They steal a taste all the time you aren’t along
Coconut toasted really blows down those blues
But you know they’ll make you all laugh out
After they leave you baffled
You might not feel it now
But when the fun cuts throughYou’re going to know and how
Laughter tears is going to fill your head
When it becomes too much
You’re going to snort aloud
But you know they’ll make you all laugh out
After they leave you baffled
You know that what you eat you are
But what is sweet now, turns sweeter, I bet
We all know powdered su-hu-gar
But can you tell me, what you laughing at?

Doughnuts! Oh, doughnuts! Fried circles of yum.
You food that I simply adore.
You’re sure not nutritious, but you’re so delicious
I’m always left wishing for more.
I love you with frosting or covered in sprinkles.
I swoon for you, sweet, sugar raised!
When you’re filled with jelly, you warm up my belly…
While still leaving room for a glazed.
I’ll dip you in coffee or dunk you in milk.
I’ll eat you for breakfast or brunch.
I get so impassioned for simple old-fashioned
That sometimes I make them my lunch.
Doughnuts! Oh, doughnuts! Definers of yum.
You perfect fried circles of dough.
Although you’re caloric, you leave me euphoric…
So give me a dozen to go!

“At a Loss” by Peggy Ankerman
My kitty crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
I have his picture on my fridge.
No more dirt upon his paws
No devastation from his claws
My eyes and nose shall run no more,
and no more furballs on the floor.
The litter box is thrown away.
There are no cat food bills to pay.
Why do I grieve at kitty’s end?
The precious cat was my best friend.
