On Saturday, I mentioned that Irma was my Dad’s favourite character and that my Dad died in 2020 aged 91. Some readers expressed sorrow for my loss and one asked if it was COVID. No, it wasn’t COVID although some of the other patients in the same hospital as my Dad did die from COVID at that time. My Dad was suffering from pneumonia and died from a heart attack brought on by his pneumonia. He died in his sleep so no one noticed his heart attack.

My favourite strip is Calvin and Hobbes. My Dad also loved it. I don’t know if it was his favourite strip as well as mine but it was certainly one of his favourites. My Dad once said, “Whatever did we do before Calvin and Hobbes?” That marvellous strip only lasted just over ten years but it is still wonderful to revisit it.

So, no strawberry-jam doughnuts, pineapple upside-down cake, cherry sundaes and banana splits, then? No cheese-and-tomato pizza? Aren’t fruit the staple of the vast majority of sweet treats?
