The difference between hummingbirds and kids? Hummingbirds aren’t as messy.

Birds have air sacs throughout the body, connected to the lungs. They get oxygen when they inhale and when they exhale! Hummingbirds can breathe from 300-500 times a minute: http://www.rubythroat.org/rthuanatomymain.html

Perhaps the hovering helps curtail the spillage.

Another experiment ends in an learning experience, especially if the experimenter has to clean up.

The flower from which the hummingbird is sipping is standing still, and the bird is hovering. It appears that this kid was holding the juice box in his hand that was flapping up and down as he was running. To simulate the hummingbird’s action, he should have put the juice box on a desk or table and sipped from it while standing in place and flapping his arms.
