So Linus befriended the Great Pumpkin and used GP’s powers to get revenge on all the people who picked on him in school? I LOVE it! I want the movie rights, too!!

No, it was Peppermint Patty that caused it.

Clearly the back story is that Linus was scarred by the events of his youth — remember everyone laughing at him for believing in the Great Pumpkin, and how let down he was when it didn’t appear in his very sincere pumpkin patch? So he spent a lot of time in his basement, honing his scientific genius and ultimately building this thing. He’s out of sight right now, inside the pumpkin working its controls, but no doubt he’ll soon be making an appearance, appropriately attired in a supervillain spandex suit.

He can be a bit of a rapscallion at heart.
