    It is the action of being “let go” by the employer than being unemployed that we use redundant in UK – e.g. he was made redundant, if some one was to say “he’s redundant” we’d expect either to be working notice/gardening leave or been let go very recently. Being made redundant/redundancy is a no fault termination and will be paid a “redundancy” (legal requirement if employed over 2 years)

    If someone hasn’t had a job for a while we just say unemployed (or something less polite)

    This makes me think of the movie of “Max Headroom”, where it was discovered that people who watched too many “Blipverts” on TV (high speed commercials) were exploding. Fortunately, as one of the (British) Network executives put it, with a sneer in his voice, it mostly affected “pensioners, the disabled, and the … unemployed”, the last group getting the most emphasis in his sneer.

    Just for clarity, in the UK, it is the post that becomes redundant, not the individual. The effect is the same, someone being out of work. But they as people are not redundant.
