What does thinking “old” mean? Personally, I’m having the time of my life. Sure, there is the bugaboo of being a little closer to death every day, but people have more patience with me, and I get away with a lot of shinanigans that I never could have gotten away with as a young man.
I think Earl is right. They even did an episode of the old Odd Couple show where Felix and Oscar both started thinking they were old and they started feeling and acting old. Think young, feel young.
Growing up, it felt sad to watch my parents go to their friend’s funerals. One by one, as they departed, my parents were saddened by the loss of the fun of a shared past and the new memories they would never again make. Eventually, there were no friends left. No one left to share the past, the past lost its value to enrich. Then dad died and mom was left with no one with whom remembered the past like she did. Us kids did what we could to fill in her voids. But in the end, she joined the love of her life and all her friends.
I’ll never be “old” because “old” is twenty years older than my age now. Today is the youngest I will ever be. The aches and pains are not as bad as they are going to be twenty years from now. Being that I’m 79 now, I may not have twenty years left. ;-P
How to know you’re officially old: When every doctor you see bears a frightening resemblance to Doogie Howser. (And the fact that you remember Doogie Howser at all.)
Why is it always people much younger than myself say things like “You’re only as old as you feel” or “Age is just a number”? Of course, nowadays, people “much younger than myself” are about 99.6% of all the people I know.
Everyone is old… 24 hours after birth, that baby would be 1 day OLD! The second you breath air..YOU are OLD! So if they are in their 60s than they are 7 Decades old!
I am in awe of the olfactory gift that dogs have! When they put their head out of a car window, head held high into the breeze, it’s like taking a trip around the world for all they can sense.
Age is a number, more practically expressed by the challenge presented by the fifth flight of steps, the chores now hired done, being more comfortable driving in the slow lane, and watching the condition of our peer group. Still, just watching a decade birthday go by can be intimidating.
I am not sure old is all bad. We get to retire, have time to pursue hobbies and travel. We can read until 4a and sleep until noon. We can rile up grandkids and send them home. We can dress any way we want to. Much freedom comes with age. Wisdom of a lifetime can help others.

Being old also means that Earl has a smaller pool from which to pick his friends.

I’m pretty sure being old can be determined with reference to the calendar.

I feel young — all the associated pains notwithstanding — but the mirror puts up a powerful counterargument.

Dad will be 96 in a few weeks. He keeps reminding us that while he may be getting older and slower, he’s not old yet.

In my case yes I feel old not certain of Earl and Opal’s age. For me one more month I turn older, already on Medicare and secondary health insurance.
