I used to put the cookies away and pour the milk back into the container, leaving crumbs and milk-stain on the glass.

Today’s strip isn’t too far off of how I discovered/realized my parents, um, complicity in Santa’s leaving presents under the tree…

I hated the day I found out my parents were Santa. I loved thinking there was such a person who came and left gifts.

…and they all have the same handwriting. I’ve always theorized that Santa is diabetic and lactose intolerant. Fortunately in my house, the cookies were outstanding and seemingly irresistible. Always gone.

A perfect Christmas strip! The innocence of youth, Mom and Dad playing along, and the “oops, we got all the details right except one!” Merry Christmas Chip and fellow TBL Nation members!

The Santa character never made sense to me. When my 6 yo sibling told 4 yo me that the presents came from parents, I wasn’t surprised. I continued the ruse for the benefit of the next younger sibling.

You don’t have to worry about Wilberforce being suspicious of Santa, he’ll be a senior in high school before he figures that one out.

Santa preferred a small bottle of Coke (the old 6 1/2 oz green glass bottles) with his chocolate chip cookies when he came to my house. We didn’t have a chimney, so my Dad made sure Santa had a key.

Obviously, the existence of Santa is interpretive, but, in my mind, since Santa embodies everything about sharing, giving, and caring, then, he is as real as any of us.“Merry Christmas, to all, and to all, a good night!”

Wilbur is much like me when I was this age. My realization of something fishy was all the store Santa’s. I couldn’t understand how Santa could be in every store at the same time. We had started at the Belk’s Department Store and went to the Penny’s. And there was a Santa in both of them. That’s when I asked my momma what’s up with that? She was amused.

“Yeah, son, that’s quite a coincidence. I guess next year we should leave out cookies and coffee for the big guy.”

And Wilberforce gets another year of believing.
