I feel bad for Brent as I too would frequently in middle and high school have crushes on girls who didn’t notice I was alive> Granted with time I realized I coudl’ve just told them and he could at least make an attempt, but I get both the pain and the oblivousness of having feelings for someone whose just.. nothing like you and is only barely aware you exist.
That said.. I realized while writing this he DOES have a shot suprisingly. Heart and Dean did have their whole sorta relationship in elementary school, so it has shown she can be romantically intrested in someone whose not at all like her.
More importantly her ignorance of him dosen’t seem to come out of malice but a character flaw: Heart can be oblivously self centered, and it’s come up quite often in this version: Kat tried to hint at the fact she was gay to Heart and Charlotte outright telling her when asked what boys she likes at school that “It’s the boy part i’m not intrested in”. Heart… took until last christmas with the gift exchange and seeing Kat and Lee together to connect those dots, while Charlotte… had an ooh figuring it out a panel later. It’s like I said not malicious, Heart just isn’t good at picking up on things socially. It’s shown to a smaller degree in the arc where she shows open contempt of spelling bhee’s while kat’s training, having to realize later that even if it’s something she dosen’t like she should still be there for her bestie.
If Brett can get past that and try a gesture or just ask her out he MIGHT have a chance. It’s still slim, she could easily just turn him down and that’s equally fine, at least he tried, but I was shocked to realize he may not be as out of luck as I thought.
I feel like this has a chance of going wrong for the comic entirely. The fact that some of them would be dating means that the author has to be able to keep up with all of them while also having different arcs running at the same time. So we might get something similar to what happened I think about a month ago where the Heart and Dean arc would alternate days.
The kids in this story are eleven years old. Having a crush on someone at that age is not the same as having a crush when a person becomes a teen or when a person is sixteen or when a person is eighteen or when a person is in mid twenties, etc….
