Wind and rain. We had the power go out last week. I found everyone a flashlight. I turned off all the servers(6 Raspberry Pi’s) and my main work station. Shut all the UPS back-ups. I moved the generator out of the garage. Got my two long extension cords, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. Got the generator tank filled. Got the fire extinguisher ready just in case. Checked the ground connection to the generator. Grabbed the starting cord and before I could turn the generator over, the power came back.
Then, for the rest of the night I had to resolve a network IP address conflict on two of my servers most probably caused my the power. Of course I had the set-up correct two years ago (sure…you did….). At least a tree branch didn’t come through the roof again.
Our apartment building is on the same grid as a nearby hospital; in the 22 years we’ve lived here we’ve hardly ever lost power for more than a few minutes.
Yup.. that works so long as there is some battery charge available. Mind, candles only last so long as well. Emergency generators work.. till they run out of fuel. In short, we are poorly equipped for a long term extensive outage.
I once had a power outage on a Sunday that occurred before dusk. I phoned my parents to pick me up and bring me to their unaffected house so I wouldn’t feel bored in my dark apartment. Went back to my place a few hours later after phoning the nearby grocery store (the same I work at) which was also affected to see if power was back, which it was.

We spent the build up to Winter being warned about power cuts, yet to have one though (probably jinxed it now of course)

Power blackouts are a rarity in the Netherlands, en brown-outs almost never occur. It is my understanding that in the US, both are a fact of life.

With Garfield around what happens in the dark, does not stay in the dark.

Use the phone to call 911. From the looks of the 2nd to last panel, there is a mad man loose in the house!

You won’t laughing, Garfield, when it turns out that your phone doesn’t have much battery left and it won’t provide that light for very long.

Better hope there’s plenty of charge in that phone’s battery.
