Boomers had practice in Philadelphia. We once had a rock radio station with the call letters WIFI. It was pronounced “why-fye” just like the wireless internet today. Unfortunately, WIFI-92 is now a country & western station called 92.5-WXTU.

I think 8% is a gross underestimate.

2010 I needed a new laptop, and as I was visiting my daughters in the UK, I popped into Dixons. I was discussing with the sales-girl the spec I needed, memory, ports, speed etc. Oh and of course WiFi (pronounced (Wee Fee). She looked at me as if I was an alien. “Wahh…?”

I’d been living in France since 2002, just five years after WiFi had appeared. For those eight years I’d only heard it pronounced Wee Fee. France, Spain, Hungary, Belgium, Netherlands and even Arkansas all pronounce it Wee Fee …

There maybe other countries who pronounce it Wee Fee but I don’t know from personal experience.

The Wi-Fi factoid must refer to America only. In Spain and France, close to 100% pronounce it Wiffy. In Spanish-speaking Latin America it’s usually pronounced the American way. It can be pronounced either way as Wi-Fi actually doesn’t stand for anything (it doesn’t stand for Wireless Fidelity or anything of the sort).
