A friend of mine once told me that he knew a man who would always lend money to his children when they asked, until they got a car. After they got a car, they were on their own financially.
I gave all 3 of my kids a credit card when they started to drive at 16. I told them it was for emergencies only (a car break down, etc). 2 of the 3 abided by that rule but the 3rd one slipped once. I told that he could decide whether to turn the card back to me or abide by the rule. He chose to keep the card and thereafter never misused it,
Never co-sign for a card or a loan! I learned my lesson, and never again. You become the “bad guy” really fast (instead of it being some greedy, faceless corporation) when you want the borrower to pay you back after you’ve fronted what they owe.
