Actually, that’s how Fort Benning looked from the 34-foot jump tower in 1962.

His ride was so fiery, it wore down the 100-foot cliff. Yeah, that’s it.

Every panel a gem! & the layout is brilliant. If your eyes scan ahead & jump to the ending before you’ve fully appreciated each panel, you can still go back & enjoy each one. I love the lone hat.

We actually had a sledding hill in our neighborhood that started out like that. Maybe the first 3 or 4 feet was straight down before it started to get some actual slope to it. Like Calvin’s, ours wasn’t something set up by adults for us, it was a drop into a gully in back of town. It was a 10 minute walk out of the gully and up the street to get back to the top. the hill itself was unclimbable. Trees were a real danger on the way down if you didn’t steer you were going to get hurt. (Thinking back on it, a friend’s broken nose sparked an investigation among us 4th-graders that would have made the NTSB proud. We developed some safety rules for that hill after the incident. The grown ups? They just said “You kids better be more careful!” and went about their business.)

At age 6, Calvin doesn’t have much life to flash before his eyes on the way down.

I went back to a childhood sledding hill I had not seen since I was a child. I was shocked at how barely inclined it was. I remembered that hill as epic! Never go back.

Been there. Every group of kids has a ‘’Dead Man’s Hill’’.

When and If, you find yourself there, as an adult …‘’Hmm, I remember this as steeper?’’

When I was a youngster there was a hill we all knew as ‘Mount Misery’. It was a scary ride down on a pushbike and misery to ride back up.
