I think it was Nathanael Hawthorne or Washington Irving who wrote or adapted a story about a baker who sued a poet for enjoying the smell of his bread but not buying it (he couldn’t afford it). The judge told the poet to borrow all the money he could, bring it back to the court, and give it to the baker. After the baker had greedily run his hands through it, the judge made him give it back to the poet, because he had gotten as much enjoyment out of it as the poet had the bread.
