Many of the most stringent rules are for harmless sites. I have one that reports my house temperature every 20 minutes. Lets me act if there is a long power outage. Who cares?
All these silly rules make it impossible to come up with a password that you can remember, so you have to write it down. I also use a password manager.
One of the issue I have now is that I am job searching and each site wants you to establish an account so that’s one password per job application. Yeah, right, I’m going to make each one of them unique.
A password should be long, hard to guess and easy to remember.
I cannot express the importance of length. There are several utilities that measure how long it will take to crack a password. According to one of them:
6 characters long = 7 milliseconds
8 characters long = 5 seconds
10 characters long = 58 minutes
15 characters long = 1,000 years
So make your passwords at least 10 characters long. Most hackers won’t spend that much time on them and move onto lower hanging fruit.
I thought is was funny several years ago when sites went from “YOU CAN NOT USE ANY SPECIAL CHARACTERS” Not that I had every thought of or tried to do so. Then one day “YOU MUST USE A SPECIAL CHARACTER” I used NU password manager that I am totally looked out of. BTW I just noticed GC spell check doesn’t seem to work when you use all caps.

And you have to change it every week, without repeating a previous password.

Passwords are ridiculous on some sites! For instance, this one. Geeze, it’s the funnies, not a secured site like a bank!
