Just musing on the artwork here, I notice that this toon never has any thin lines. I understand that most cartoonists work on a fairly large scale and have their originals photoreduced to fit in the publication space. That process gives them fine lines. It looks like this one is done on a small scale originally, then photoenlarged for publication.
