I can understand Earl’s feeling of regret. Back in the late 1960s, during an annual vacation in Provincetown, there was a fringed poncho that I almost bought. But I was a teenager with very little money back then, and I had sold my guitar to get extra money for the trip, so I told myself I shouldn’t splurge. It’s been over half a century, and I still think of that poncho from time to time.
If I remember correctly, when I worked at a Holiday Inn, that had a prime rib buffet, they could go back as many times as they wished, for salad sides, and dessert, but there was a 2 X limit on the prime rib.
My great uncle was in the infantry during WWII. One of the things he learned on his walk through Europe was to never turn down a chance to eat, sleep, sh!t, shower or shave because you can never tell when you’ll get another chance. I would have doubled up on the prime rib and foregone the mashed potatoes.

I regret making a mistake with peas at the salad bar and making a mess. It was like herding cats.

“Where’s the beef?!”

I would regret that too. That’s why why there is meat involved, I ask for two portions.

He probably has other regrets, but doesn’t want to talk about them. It’s all too depressing.
