A pant was one leg of what we now call pants. As I recall it anyway. Think wrap-around chaps for folks who otherwise were bare-legged.

The word “pant” is shortened from “pantaloon”, which was originally a single item separately placed on each leg. It took two pantaloons to cover both legs, so became a pair of pantaloons, or a pair of pants. Eventually, pants evolved to become a single piece garment, but the phrase still applies.

One pant by itself is pretty useless.

Very few children and NO adults should ever wear a “speedo” after the age of active competition… They fall under the same category of trying to reduce “drag” of water on the body and should really only be worn by those males willing to go to any lengths to win in a competition up to and including “depilation” of body hair.

The “scant” covering of the human body has traditionally been known as a way to “titillate” others sexually and should be avoided whenever possible – full nudity is preferable in almost all cases.

When I was just a tad youngster and belonged to the YMCA, our swimming class (all boys) didn’t use swimming suits at all. There were no more windows into the pool room than there were into the locker room, and nobody thot twice about it.

“Pair of pants” — more properly, of "trousers"— is a case of cultural lag. Quite a bit of lag, at that. Once, the legs of trousers were separate pieces, and were attached to an upper-body garment (usually “trunks”, also plural) with special laces called “points”. One’s privaties and a-hole were covered with yet another separate bit, a “breech-clout”. A royal pain, but the separate clout led the way to a fitting out the genital area with a purposefully prominent “cod-piece”. Ah, those were the days, when young men unblushingly followed their discreetly padded etceteras around, for the admiration of whomever appreciated masculine qualities.
