This is 14…It was the best of times and the worst of times!

Hormones. We have seen many comic strips where Elly was yelling at the sewing machine. Was that hormones too? I think it’s more of “Like mother, like daughter.”

Why should Liz have to use that sewing machine?

She can ice skate, sing in the church choir—and look after “Aypo” far better than her mother!!

You’ll be glad someday that you learned this Liz. I wish I’d learned it. You can make your own clothes. You just need to give yourself time to get the hang of it.

My granddaughter is about the same age.

My sewing machine still does this to me. I just don’t throw a fit over it. Not worth the effort. :P

bought my wife a lovely brother sewing machine. sitting side by side i began to teach her how to use it. after i broke the last needle in the pack, we gave up for the day, i boxed up the parts, and put them and the machine on the shelf by the refrigerator for later. 30 years ago.

Huh. I never tried to use a sewing machine. I wonder if I should learn? I mean I can sew on a button and stitch on some stripes(barely). I wonder if there is a sewing school somewhere. Like maybe next to the Judo studio or the road grader college.

Like I said yesterday, the tension was off. Sewing takes practice and mistakes happen. I remember sewing right through a finger once, and was surprised at the lack of pain and blood. A properly running machine requires some maintenance and careful adjustments. The machine isn’t stupid, it’s a machine.

I understand what is happening. That almost always happened every time I started to sew. Usually the bobbin was messed up. I really enjoyed sewing, made most of my clothes (even a heave lined wool winter coat) until the price of material and patterns climbed so high.

Sounds like they’re not teaching home ec anymore. Did her mom actually teach her how to use a sewing machine. I at least give her code for trying, most kids don’t want to try or learn something like this, just want to go buy a new pretty! :(

Liz, Liz, Liz, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Patience, practice and perseverance are all that is needed.

If a machine was invented too recently for human evolution to fold it into our instincts, you’re going to suck the first time you use it.

I was taught in home ec that that dial was called the “Do-Not-Touch Tension”.It’s a persnickety little knobby!

My mom was an excellent sewer, she even made my 8th grade graduation dress. Handy when trying to raise 6 kids. I haven’t touched a sewing machine since I passed Home Ec class in 1980
