Looks like he failed the “show disinterest” part and acted very interested, only it was NEGATIVE interest. Rookies.

I she was really interested, she would have slugged him (and likely have knocked him off of his swing).

It would have been better if he hadn’t gotten into this business at all.

Sedgwick’s description in the 1st panel sounds more like “playing hard to get” but he acted out “negging” just fine which is less acting disinterested in someone and more being negative towards and about them (the word “negging” is obviously short for negative) Supposedly if you do that you can undermine & bring down someone’s confidence and self worth which can cause them to respond by seeking out your approval or feeling like they don’t deserve you or couldn’t do better than you anyway. Though Sedgwick’s dialogue is a bit on the nose as he just outright insults her, negging is more like backhanded compliments.

That Sedgwick would use such emotional manipulation in his 1st forays into dating and at his young age is truly terrible and says nothing good about his character which may very well be beyond redemption

Some girls are attracted to “bad boys”, Sedgwick. So get a black bicycle and always keep a candy cigarette dangling out of your mouth.

Disinterest is not the same as insulting. It used to be called “playing hard to get” but “negging” sounds so much uglier.

The problem with my trying to be tall, dark, handsome, and mysterious is that I couldn’t honestly do any of them. Fortunately, my wife has a heart of gold. Either that or very low standards.
