I seem to recall that when we harvested beets, carrots and turnips we just grabbed then by the leafy part and pulled them out of the ground. No tools required.
“Oh, and meet my husband/brother/father/uncle (pick one). The owner/manager of this urban farm, whose too cheap to hire any actual laborers. (Toldja there would be a catch to it)
