Icelandic phone books are alphabetized by first name because Icelandic people have patronymics (Björk Guðmundsdóttir — Björk, daughter of whose father is named Guðmund — and Stefán Karl Stefánsson — Stefán Karl son of whose father is named Stefán — for example).
Icelandic last names are a sort of weird system, so I can see why they’d do it that way.
That sea slug is a really incredible animal. Aside from just looking amazing, their ability to take a single specific complex kind of cell from other extremely dangerous creatures (like the Portuguese Man O’War) and then keep them alive in highly specialized parts of their own bodies. There’s not really anything else like it.
Fun fact: on the early episodes of Gilligan’s Island, the theme song doesn’t mention “the Professor and Mary Ann”… it replaces their names with “all the rest”. By the way, is the name “Mary Ann” or “Marianne”?
That’s right, in Iceland I’m at the top of the list, and in Denmark I’m at the bottom. ~ Aaron Zwick, well not yet because I live in Buffalo, but still
May the sword be with you as it is with Marie. And gesundheit.
All the characters had been given full names, but Sherwood Schwartz forbade their use during the show. Skipper Jonas Grumby, Willie Gilligan. I heard Gilligan was addressed as Willie once on the never aired pilot episode.
I’ve heard of people fascinated by Blue Dragon sea slugs picking them up out of curiosity and getting poisoned. I mean, it isn’t a near death sentence like a blue ringed octopus, but come on people, NEVER pick up a vibrantly colored wild animal!
I could have sworn there was a newscast in Gilligan’s Island that told all of the real names. Skipper was Jonas Grumby and Gilligan was Willie Gilligan and Mary Anny was Mary Ann Summers.
Yeah, in Iceland, it’s traditional that a son’s last name is the father’s first name plus “son”, and the daughter’s is the father’s first name plus “dottir”. Did I mention inbreeding exists there?
excuse me — Gilligan, affectionately called “little buddy” by the “Skipper”, is the bumbling, dimwitted, accident-prone first mate of the SS Minnow. His first name, given in the pilot episode, is Willie.
I believe that in the first episode, the crew and passengers were all named in a radio broadcast about the missing ”Minnow”. They were Jonas Grumby, (Skipper), Willie Gilligan, Thurston Howell the Third and wife Lovey, Professor Roy Hinckly, Movie Star Ginger Grant, and farm girl Mary Ann Frobisher.

Gilligan is his last name. Willy is his first name. It was mentioned on the never aired pilot on their radio’s newscast about the wreck.
