We’ve all been there. My Sara does this all the time. Sometimes she’ll even shove a toy under the door and then try retrieving it. Mostly she just waves to me under the door. Gracie, on the other hand, Gracie bangs on the door like she’s serving a search warrant!

I still had Jasper when this cartoon was first published. Forever after, when he was at the bathroom door trying to get in, I interpreted his voice as saying “ma’am”!

I never closed the bathroom door. In fact, Georgie and I would play ball while I was … sitting down. Even had a special tool to grab the ball when she would drop it just out of my reach. Special times.

We used to have a folding door on the bathroom. We ended up having to get a hook lock on it after one of them worked out that, if they stood against the middle of the door and pushed, it opened…

I remember 2 cats scratching the door..and me yelling to stop scratching the door. When I came out they would walk away and ignore me.

You went away and left us long time ago

And now we′re knocking on your door

    Ya hear us knocking

    But we can’t come in

    Ya hear us knocking

    Ma’am where have you been?

We begged you not to go but you said bye, the heck

And now you’re telling us soon you’re back

    Ya hear us knocking

    But don’t let us in

    Ya hear us knocking

    Go back where you′ve been

You better get back to our being-a-fuss

′Cause your long, long kind of bathe ain’t good for us

    Ya hear us knocking

    But we can′t come in

    Ya hear us knocking

    Go back where you’ve been

We told you way along in the hall

That we would never let ya go at all

    Ya hear us knocking

    But you can′t come out

    Ya hear us Ma’am-ing

    Your comeback is in doubt

    Yeah

    Awwmeowhoooo!!

Unless we have visitors, none of us close doors. This would happen if we did.

Monroe thinks he has to supervise me in the bathroom. He loves watching water. Yesterday, he jumped on top of the (unused) shower, and then walked on the tub edges. He sat on my walker to watch me get started in my bath. In the bathroom, when I sit, he rubs my legs and sniffs me. Then he jumps on everyone’s shoulders. Bleek!

When this ran the first time, I finally figured out that “Ma’am” and “Man” were the actual sounds from the cats. Makes so much sense. The people can’t hear the “What are you doing in there?” part.

I would make the mistake of closing the door and Loaner Cat would flop over under where the handle was and try pulling the door open from the bottom while Murphy Dobe would stand over her and keep banging on the handle with his nose in solidarity, just to make sure I knew they were both out there, waiting. I’d get fed up and open the door, usually the half bath was the room, and both would scuttle in, Loaner Cat flopping on my feet and my 95 pound Dobe trying to turn around between me and the sink without stepping on LC so he could sit there and get petted. Gawd, I miss him. So does LC.

It must be serious for Lupin to abandon his anchor spot and show up on the scene!! I lived in an apartment once that had sliding doors on my bedroom closet. My cats loved to go in the closet. I learned to leave the one open slightly to avoid the (what sounded to me) LOUD, repetitive noise of the doors rattling on the tracks. Of course, the only time there seemed to be a sense of urgency to get in the closet was late at night!

I don’t bother closing the bathroom door since I live alone. I’ll have to do it this week, as I have a close friend coming up to stay for a week. I have to figure out how to stretch my rations to feed two people and still have food for myself for the rest of the month.

We gave up closing the bathroom door years ago. I keep a stick-with-cloth-attatched toy on a hook next to the royal throne. Our biggest cat, Moo-goo, insists my morning constitutional is playtime, otherwise he will pester me to distraction.

Quick, form a cat pyramid to reach the doorknob. Then again, if the door in fact leads to a bathroom, that is not suitable for the news.

OT: My cat, Woodgie, has been howling a lot. It may be because of the changes, but she hasn’t done this before. It’s getting to where when she is awake, she’s yowling unless somebody is close. The vet said she might become a little confused as she gets older, so maybe that’s it. She’s not eating the wet food anymore but seems to be eating the crunchy food and drinking enough water. She’s almost 17, so I worry about her.

Maverick hangs out in my bedroom a fair amount, something he’ll do with greater regularity over the next 77 days (not that I’m counting) until The Girl goes back to school. However, he will quite pointedly follow me into into the room – even if I’m taking a shower, which is surprising as he otherwise wants nothing to do with water unless it’s in his bowl.

There are no closed doors in the apartment. When both Sebastian and Vlad were little, I had to get locks on the sink cabinets. The only closed door in the apartment is where the water heater/pantry is. And that’s only because I have something in front of it. Bedroom, bathroom, no.

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Beatrixia: Burt, there’s a kittygarden class coming to the Very Good Library tomorrow. Are all the litter rooms in good working order?

Burt-Ra: They should be, but I’ll have Iggy make sure.

Bea: That would be great. If you could spare him for a few hours, he was great with the kittens last time.

    Burt-Ra: Sure, no problem.

    The Next Day

Iggy: The litter rooms are all in working order, Bea. I have a book all ready for them.

Bea: That’s wonderful, Igs. I have an activity for them as well.

    Iggy: Great. What is it?

Bea: We’re going to sing sea shanties with Ora Z’s group Mallets Towards None.

    Sometime Later

Ms Sebyat: Alright, everyone’s gone to the litter room, now Mr. Iggy will read The Pirates That Only Do a Few Things.

We only close the door when someone else is in the house, and then not all the way, because the cats’ water fountain is in that room. With the door two-thirds to three-quarters closed, the cats can get in and the person has privacy.

Of course, then one of them will decide he or she wants “sink water.”

Holly has wrestled the bath mat into submission quite a few times, usually in the tub. It’s an old cast iron tub, and it sounds like someone beating up a tympanum—in the middle of the night, of course.

My cat was the weirdest. She liked to share bathroom trips, and she would often wait to use her litter box until I did the equivalent. Watching me take a bath was major entertainment for her. Closing the door — any door — made her crazy, and she would howl and throw herself against the door, so I only did it when absolutely necessary and only for a few moments.

My friend stayed with my last dog when I went out of town. Like me, he lives alone. It freaked him out when my dog followed him into the bathroom! My current dog also does that sometimes, or if the door is shut, he’ll wait outside.

My theory of why they do this doesn’t explain it for cats; but here it is. I heard that dogs watch you while they go, because they’re at their most vulnerable, and they’re looking to you for protection. So, it makes sense that they would want to return the favor, and guard you while you go.

Very much On-Topic for today’s strip, I happened to close the bathroom door the other night to help keep the bedroom dark so I could sleep and Bella suddenly started wagging her tail like mad. I asked her, “Is Akiro in the bathroom” and her tail sped up even more.

Sure enough, as soon as I opened the door, a very miffed house panther emerged; he’d been enjoying the warm “breeze” from the dehumidifier.
