climbing mt fuji is basically like queuing for a movie uphill – the line moves so slowly that you have a hard time working up a sweat and the biggest danger is tripping over the trash that folks here leave everywhere they go. so when a buddy asked me to join him on a jaunt up mt taisetsu, our highest local peak, i didn’t give it much thought. i showed up dressed incorrectly and overburdened with a heavy pack and by the end of the nearly 8-hour trek was ready to drop from exhaustion. one of the best experiences of my life – a hike through breathtaking scenery that you can’t see anywhere else…

It is one of those times where you have to stop and say to yourself, " Well, I asked for this".

I used to take photographs of my wife after the fifth miserable hour in the snow for display the next time she suggested such an expedition. :)
It wasn’t as big a deterrent as I had thought it would be.
