Elly has worked at the library for 10 years, and yet, is still in the bottom two. Either Elly did not put as much into the job as they are saying, or someone else has it in for Elly. The other possibility is that they may favor someone with an actual degree in library sciences which not only does Elly not have, but Elly has not been trying to get one.
Also, who is Elly talking to in the final two panels?
I was suddenly fired. No reason and so was the Atty. I worked with. We were part of a larger Business. The only reason I could figure out was we were 25 miles away from the Main Office and they couldn’t easily spy on us. That was on a Friday. When they came to haul away the furniture they found 2 offices with just two desks and one chair. We took everything else, every pencil, pen, scrap of paper, all the Law Books, and my chair. No one ever called me to ask about the supplies either. Hah! This was 35 years ago so…..
Speaking of making a good start in cutting expenses. The expensive buttons down the front on El’s new dress in panel 3 have disappeared in panel 4. As my fashion advisor used to say, ‘A button saved is a button earned!’
One day my husband picked me up from work in a “new” (used) car he got, only to find out that my contract ended & they weren’t extending. Fast forward a while later: my husband picked me up from work in a “new” (used) car he got (the old one died), only to find out that the person I was covering for (she was actually trying a different job within the company) wanted her old position back so they let me go. We actually both laughed the second time.
Only 5 more months for retirement so I won’t have to worry about layoff. I have worked long enough. Hope Elly can return dress and get store credit for it. Wearing it just once and handled gently hope the store will understand her situation.
In the US this would not be a problem as dentists make bookoo money. In Canada not so sure. I do know that the US gets a lot of medical professionals from Canada.
Helen is wearing a new dress. Antonio sits down to the lunch counter
Antonio: May I have a cup of coffee, please?
Helen: I am closed.
Antonio: Closed? This hour is when you can maximalize customers.
Helen: I am preparing for a lecture at the community college. I just bought a new dress for it. The lecture will be “How to Run a Successful Business”. Antonio gives himself a look thinking she has no clue that he is a paying customer If there is anyone I learn from, it is from my husband, who everyone respects as the owner of Sandpiper Air.
Sandpiper office
Joe{on phone}: “Oh come on, I cannot be that many payments past due! What? You are taking steps to repossess the plane?!?! Mr. Lewis, just give me one more week to catch up, I will…hello? Hello?”
I was let go 2 years ago from a job of nearly 13 years, but the process was very shady. They essentially threw me under a train to get rid of me. I have my suspicions that 2 of my former co-workers (who are no longer with that company) conspired with the new boss (who had been with the company for a few months during the COVID lockdown) to axe me. They wouldn’t say why, and being I live in an “at-will” state, they don’t need to give any reason. All I can say is thank goodness for the second job I’ve been working in parallel with that one. Otherwise, I don’t know where I’d be (Living on the streets, I guess.).
One of my former teachers remarked that he had been in education for 30 years, and not once in his career was he ever placed on tenure. He then went on to say he felt that was good, as it encouraged him to be innovative in his lessons and not stagnate with complacency.
Elly should have used the taxpayer-funded grants to pay for the redecoration of her house when she had the chance. There was a civil rights leader in Chicago who used donations and grants to live it up.
No more comments about how Elly is determined to spend every penny her husband earns? She planned to pay for the redecorating herself, for the entire family to enjoy, and she is still a homemaker-wife, having just a part time job, which it appears she took very seriously.
Not only has the human race devolved into stupid meat-bags, their attention span is waaaaaay too short to even think about reading a full length book. So libraries are doomed.

Oh poor Elly. Maybe she can return the dress though you’re not supposed to do that after you’ve worn it.

well at least you don’t have to redecorate when you find out you’re out of a job.

This could be a good strip:
John goes to his office but is stopped
Policeman: “Sir, you cannot come in. That is why.”
Sign: DANGER. This building contains deadly flesh eating bacteria.
John: “How long will this be?”
Policeman: “Until the government declares the entire building safe. It may take a long time.”
John: “Oh well; I am glad Elly is working.”
Library
Head Librarian: "Due to budget cuts we regret to inform everyone of the following layoffs which I will now read in alphabetical order:
Patterson, Elly
That is all.
Elly: “Oh well, thank goodness for John’s dental office.”
