In my country, we have one national park that does charge admission. Luckily, we still have some small forests and other areas of nature that are free.
They are not hiking in much of California’s state forests….some even require a paid pass just to stop and admire the scenery. https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1049
Too much of the beauty of Nature in our country has been pillaged by land developers, who filled in, paved over and make the profits while species dwindle and disappear forever. I contend that whole-scale tree removal, paving driveways, parking lots, and roadways, and the roofs of mega malls/stores, homes, apartment complexes, etc. has done as much as anything to create the high temperatures we’re now seeing on a global scale!
Most National Parks charge you to breath in them. Nothing is free anymore. The government has to have it’s 10% of everything. Everything has a tax or a fee attached to it.
Free…until another bloated tick millionaire and his purchased politicians buy it up for flimsy expensive houses, gas stations or strip malls. See: Florida especially Wakulla Springs.
I always liked going to visit my uncle and aunt who live down in southern Illinois…they had enough land to go hiking on, even a shallow cave you could sit in! A creek and a lake nearby, just down the road, easy walking distance.

While it is very beautiful, sometimes people cannot afford the gas to get to free!

Sadly, some can’t afford the transportation, nor take the time to visit free.

Besides, what would Nature spend the money on…upgrades?

That makes it a national park. State parks (at least where I live) come with ticket booths and admission fees.

Free is good.

I’m more than willing to pay a parking or entrance fee for nicely maintained parks. The free trails all have homeless encampments.

The best things, and often the most important things, in life are indeed free.

Yes we can, but many of us refuse to seek it out…..
