Another reminder of how “old” Phoebe’s parents and grandparents are. Phoebe mentioned about two years ago that her grandparents were punk rockers. That story arc is now in the latest collection Punk Rock Unicorn.
Man, I wish there was a local arcade in operation in my hometown when I was a kid. It was one of those things you didn’t really realize how much you had missed out on it until too late, y’know?
The mall? Console games? Why you young whippersnappers, we learned to travel to the most enchanted places that were in our neighborhood-the abandoned barn down by the creek and made our own games! Mall and arcade indeed!
In kidspeak, anything that’s not an unequivocal “NO” is “yes”. And even then, if they say something like “Can we go to the mall or the playground?” a “no” will be taken to mean “no to one of them (your choice)”.
This guy makes me feel so old. I may go back and read “Pluggers” again. When I was a kid, we didn’t have no stinkin’ arcades in the mall — we didn’t even have a mall! We’d journey in the real outdoors and eat cattail roots and frog legs, and hike through forested hills and hilly forests for five miles and eat wild raspberries and gather wild leeks and morels, and catch brook trout… and we LIKED it that way!

I mean, he met his future daughter as a child and learned of the existence of both time travel AND unicorns long before Phoebe was even conceived.

We used to have an arcade at our local mall and it was great :)
I also remember playing Dragon’s Lair at the Pizza Hut we used to meet at when our family visited our aunt and uncle.
