I love the sticky hands of doom reaching out for the boys. But Ora Zella jumping right in to the danger is the best. I know exactly what she means about smelling like the color orange!
Oh woman, after all this time of raising younguns, how can you not have learned the #1 rule about Popsicles? They must be eaten outdoors, preferably near a spigot so you can just hose the kids down before letting them back indoors. Now you not only have to clean off sticky Popsicle coated kids; you have to clean off fur stuck to the sticky Popsicle coated kids.
I once stopped by to visit my girlfriend who had come down with a cold and brought an orange popsicle. For the sore throat. While I’m talking to her and she’s holding it in front of her we both look down to see her six-week old orange kitten licking away at it like there’s no tomorrow, with his eyes closed tight (I think that was so he could get his tongue farther out of his mouth).
Brought another one two weeks later and apparently during that time he’d lost his taste for orange popsicles; wouldn’t even look at it.
Now I have a craving for freeze pops (that’s what we called those) and popsicles which came on sticks and wrapped in paper but mostly I miss weather hot enough that you NEED frozen treats.
Does anyone remember the strawberry and chocolate crunch bars? They had a little strawberry or choc filling, surrounded by vanilla ice cream, and then a “crunchy” outer strawberry or choc layer. I suspect if I ate any of these things today, they would be horribly sweet (or artificial tasting). But back in the day, we didn’t know better …
We seem to have a lot of Orbsters with fond memories of hot summer days with icy sticky treats followed by the fun of running around in the hose or a sprinkler….and also as adults sharing that fun with another generation of hot sticky kids….and cats, and dogs and the neighbors.
My brother had a birthday party for the grandkids and some idiot gave them water pistols. Now, I didn’t mind the water pistols at all, but the water in them had DYE! BLUE DYE! And I had my good shorts on, silly me.
In my childhood, a mother my family knew had her children strip down to their underwear and go outdoors to eat popsicles. Then she would hose them down before they were allowed back in the house.
If this were For Better Of Worse, commenters would be decrying the lack of parental guidance with kids in the living room on the couch with popsicles making a sticky mess all over.
I’m sticky by default today, I spent the morning trimming my Hash plants getting ready for harvest in a few weeks, so my fingers were coated with resin, until I rubbed it all off. It’s going to be a mellow day, hope I have enough Funyuns!
RED ALERT! RED ALERT! CATS AND KITTENS, BE AWARE! THE CHILDREN HAVE POPSICLES!! POPSICLES CAUSE-STICKEY FINGERS THAT CAN RIP OUT YOUR FUR-CAN DRIP ON YOUR FUR AND CAUSE IT TO BECOME UNMANAGEABLE AND UNLICKABLE- WILL STAIN YOU AND ALL OBJECTS, DOWN TO YOUR DNA- AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
It was rare that I was allowed to buy anything from an ice cream truck. However, I would always go with the other kids, just to stand there in the blast of cold air whenever the driver opened a door to the inside.
Looks like the Girl is into Blue No. 1 and the boy is into a combination of Red No.40 and Yellow No. 5. Those are what would approximate the coloring seen on them. If you like scary movies, try searching for “FDA approved food dyes” and see what is allowed to be put in items (not necessarily food) meant for consumption.
PSA for those in the heat dome areas: One of the dangers of high heat and humidity is … air conditioning. The sudden temperature transition from high heat and humidity to very cold A-C (~68°F) can put quite a shock on all your systems, especially if you have been sweating a lot. If you have been active outside, it is a good idea to sit quietly in the shade until you are no longer panting and your heart rate has slowed. Sweat is saltwater, it evaporates more slowly than clear water. Bathing your wrists, face, ears, and head in clear, not cold, water will cool you quicker than sweat.
Heh. Back when I was about 5, my grandma’s neighbor had her toddler there, and someone gave it to me. It was sticky. I told whoever was there that I would drop it if someone didn’t take it. It was there that I knew I would never raise any children. I still don’t like sticky.

I want a popsicle. I like the lime ones (or, at least, the green ones. I don’t mislead myself that it actually tastes of limes).

On the day we arrive in the kitchen
And, reporting about all the fun
There’s more to flee than ten fleas as it seems
More to shoo than can ever be shunned
There’s fur to lose stayin’ in here
More sticky than glue if ya ever had a clue
But the kids giggling high
And I’m telling you why
What keeps great and small on the endless fun sound
It’s the popsicle of life
And it proves us all
Sticks on hair and hands
On the face and clothes
’Til we find our place
On the couch untainted
Before there’s popsicles
Popsicles on it…

It’s her own fault; she can’t complain. Pops are given to kids as they’re on the way outside, and then you wash them off with the hose.

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
At the Royal Palace
Queen Catshepsut the Golden: Courtiers, I have the pleasure of announcing the arrival of the venerable sage, Baba-Stet.
Baba-Stet: Thank you, Your Majesty. I have determined that this is the day to make the pilgrimage up the Chill Mountain.
Elvis-Anum: I have some important scrolls to transcribe, but they can wait.
Lupinium: This is a great opportunity to exercise and practice discipline.
Elvis: You certainly need the practice!
Maat-Tilda: We Artisans are always willing to leave our projects to conduce The Pilgrimage. Obadiah, do you wish to go?
Obie: I wouldn’t miss the oPilgrimage for anything.
Adobe Style: Are the Royal Procurers going?
Baba-Stet: I have a feeling they are already there.
The Queen: Very well, let us all go.
Puckmosis: But first we need to help Thomios and Floof clean up so they can go.
Sometime Later
Baba-Stet: We have arrived at the Kat Kiosk. Each of you may speak in turn.
Puckmosis: I’ll have a caramel fudge with extra whipped cream and sprinkles.
Elvis-Anum: Strawberry cheesecake sundae with sprinkles.
Iggy: I’d like a chocolate milkshake.
Ora Z: I’ll have a tutti frutti ice!
