Part of a former job description was to prevision chemical defense boots for the Marine Corps. I had to make sure, for any given size deployment that there would be enough L, M and S for the number of troops being deployed.

We had to overprovision by a certain amount in each size since Marines do no obligingly fit a normal distribution curve perfectly. There will be variations. It was an exercise in statistics.

So when Marines checked in for their gas masks we also asked them their shoe size.

The most common male adult size: 10.5 the most common female adult size: 8.5.

For some reason Marines on the west coast have smaller feet than Marines elsewhere.

He looks old enough to know what size shoe fits him best. Looks like he’d rather wear buckets instead.

Usually, it’s the ladies who try to cram their feet into shoes that are sizes too small and too narrow.

The shoe’s on the other foot in today’s cartoon.

Oh, and btw, this cartoon is so topical because yesterday I accompanied my wife when she went shoe shopping! Greater love hath no man …

Finding any size that fits as it once did is a long drawn out search anymore. Changes in shape, materials, and place of manufacture have caused many a return and a few choice words. Found the same in other clothing as well.
