So if the lady dog Sera shouldn’t be running around loose right now, does that mean that Sera is in heat?
Oh oh! Wouldn’t that make a funny story line for next month? Farley the Mutt and Sera are going to make some puppies! That will get Connie’s goat! heehaw!
My aunt in Mississippi had a miniature poodle named FiFi who was in heat. Aunt Rose had been religiously keeping FiFi in all week, then she got out and matched up with the neighbor’s English bulldog named Beauregard. Aunt said she hollered out the door “Oh Fifi, not Beauregard!!”
In memory of Bob Barker, this is why you always spay and neuter your pets. Although, they can still make friends and go off to meet those friends if they get out. That definitely still happens. ;-) And I have a rescue who got neutered as an adult, and while his drive to seek out females is reduced, he’s still intensely curious about females in heat. He just doesn’t do anything about it when he finds them. (So far. It’s only happened once, in a dog training class when one of the other owners discovered their new dog was actually older than they realized, and experiencing her first cycle. Vet told them she had to finish it before they could get her bits removed.)
Okay, can we try to understand what this is really about. Lynn is aware that one of the consequences of letting the characters age in normal time is that pets grow old and eventually die. (Unless she gets koi fish that live more than 40 years, or a parrot with a 70 year life span or a turtle that lives 50 years.) Farley is aging, at some time he will be departing for the rainbow bridge. By having Farley father some puppies, a part of him will live on and can remain part of the strip.
Lynn Johnston helped create a charity called the Farley Foundation, which aids lower class people and senior citizens in veterinary care. Ironically, the Farley Foundation pays for spaying and neutering.

Should have been a responsible owner and had her “fixed” then. But you can say the sane about Farley’s owners too!

If they spayed and neutered like responsible pet owners they wouldn’t be having an oops litter on the way.

And they called it puppy love
Oh, I guess they’ll never know
How a young heart really feels
And why I love her so
And they called it puppy love
Just because we’re, we’re seventeen
Tell them all it, please tell them it isn’t fair
To take away my only dream

You end up with a litter of healthy, interesting and non-inbred puppies.

All of this could have been prevented if only Connie had thought to hang a “Do Not Litter” sign on Sera’s backside.
