At my first job 2 guys would come in at 10am do nothing till the boss got there at 12, then stays to 6 when the boss left. He thought they were great workers since everyone else got in at 9 and left at 5

That’s the silly thing about getting raises. If you do your job well, you are “just doing your job”. If you do it badly, fall behind but then pick up the pace at the end and get it done in time by the skin of your teeth, you are told “he went above and beyond and succeeded where we thought we’d fail”. That’s how you get a raise.
