The odd thing is that as important as cats were to the agricultural economy of that part of the world (Israel as well as Egypt) there is not a single mention of cats in the Bible. Lions, yes. Cats, no. And yet we know that many if not most households had at least one.
Yeah, that line about being better than a dead lion is as flattering as it gets for dogs. I think the next-best reference in Matthew 15:27 where a Canaanite woman reminds Jesus that even dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table.

Actually a dog in the Bible is the mirror opposite image of God.

I heard it said “that if good attitudes and deeds were the key to admission into heaven, your dog would make it in and you wouldn’t.”

Lost in one of the translations is the fact that there were Old English Sheepdogs with the Shepherds at the Birth of Jesus.

Dogs have cheeks, too, so that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

The bible doesn’t speak very highly of a lot of things.

Ad that just popped up—-“Help keep your AGing dog sharp”.
Does the cat living next door to Snoopy qualify as a “Lion”?

Proverbs 26:11 — Like a dog that returns to its vomit is a fool who reverts to his folly.
Not flattering at all.

The dog which bites the hand that feeds it is proverbial, but so is the dog which licks the hand that beats it.
Dogs are what we humans have made them to be, for better or for ill.
