Sir Francis Drake sailed right by San Francisco Bay without finding it due to the fog shrouding the Golden Gate. He continued north and found Drake’s Bay, a nice anchorage, but not the big one.
I’m laughing at myself for having misread “outlandish claims” as “outlandish clams” but it speaks well for Mr. Toomey’s ability to immerse at least this reader so completely in his underwater universe. :-)
