I once had friends who felt honored that this big neighborhood tomcat would regularly enter their apartment by the open front window and make himself at home. Then one evening they saw him enter someone else’s apartment. Betrayed!!
A neighbor’s cat continually sneaked in and ate some my cats’ kibble. She always had plenty of food at home but cats believe in diversification. She disappeared a couple of months ago. I was surprised to find I miss her.
A sweet orange tabby used to be a regular visitor, happy for pettin’s and eager to follow us inside…which we couldn’t allow out of consideration for our two indoor cats…but always ready to snarf up a dish of 9Lives, al fresco. One day I bought a cheap break-away collar and wrote on it; “Do I have a home? Please call 828-****!” Sure enough, that night we got a call from a neighbor at the far end of the street confirming his residency, and assuring us that he (Taz) was well fed and cared for, but enjoyed roaming the neighborhood, making friends, and, obviously, mooching. We had a good laugh, and agreed that in future Taz could have a few Pounce treats, but no more extra meals!
If my next door condo neighbors left their patio door open and mine was open one of my cats would go over and sleep on the foot of their bed. There were 4 cats and 2 kittens in my condo.
I still worry about the tortoiseshell who was sitting in my side yard one day a couple years ago, plainly headed in the direction of the 4 lane road which my house faces. I took her and tried to send her towards the old development in back of me which she almost certainly came from. Never saw her again.

Some pets just know how to work the system.

Knew a cat that ended up with a note around his neck, “Do not feed, I am too fat”.

How about YOU are not giving the cat enough attention, or even water, it seems…..

Cats will do that. Cats maximize their existence.

He wouldn’t cheat on you if you kept him inside; also he’ll live longer….

Nice kitty. Seems to be around home a lot, to judge from his frequent appearance in the comic panels.
