    Basic rule of dessert eating. If you have a dessert, you get all the calories. If another person orders the same dessert, you each get half the calories.

    If all the candy makers incrementally reduced the amount of sugar over a year’s time so that their candy contained half the current level, would people even notice. [Of course, some candies contain so much sugar, it might take 2 years to reach 50%, but I still wonder.] But, then think how much healthier we might be.

    On the other hand, would people eat more just to get the same sugar high? Hard to say.

    Without calories you would starve and die. Without water you would dehydrate and die. Without oxygen you would asphyxiate and die. Too much intake of any of them (and with all, including water, I am talking about the way we are supposed to consume them) can also be fatal. As with many things in life, Balance is everything.
