I’d start with the type of coffee he’s drinking before anything else.

It’s obviously affected his brain!!!

You cannot teach a gift. Some people are naturals and some are not. Adam needs to find his forte’. Writing is not it. How about coffee taster at some manufacturer? Nobody is better at that.

That is a pretty good mixed metaphor!

Laura is a successful novelist. Adam is a successful writer. The two have different skills essential to their crafts. Another difference is that as someone who works on assignment, Adam gets paid regularly. Even successful novelists have to wait for sales to exceed any advance. Most novelists don’t get advances and seldom make much money at all.

In the immortal words of C. D. Bales, “Whoa! I’d hate to see the grindstone.”

At least he didn’t say milstone.

I think Adam is more into mashed metaphors.
