Get him some Velcro dots with the adhesive backs. If they make it all the way to school, Michael can stick a fuzzy dot on his pencil, and the scratchy dot in, on, or the underside of his desk. I used to buy Velcro by the roll for posters and stuff like this.

It will disappear into that Black Hole that is the inside of a student’s desk.

That was always my experience with pencil cases.
