Break the writer’s block by writing a poem about a writer with writer’s block!

    There… solved it.

In honor of hurricane Hillary – and all the hurricanes we’ll get this year, I’m dragging out my three decades old poem/song Flying Debris. Apologies to Bo Didley.

    Flyin Debris

Oh, a big ol’ storm is comin’ dis wey,

all de bread’s gone at de Circle K,

an’ theys outta plywood at de Lowe’s uptown,

an’ dem big ol raindrops is comin’ down-

But a little rainwater don’ worry me,

What I’m a-skeered of is da flyin’ debris!

The weatherman is talkin’ on my TV,

Showin’ satellite video of how bad it will be,

an’ he’s lookin’ all sour, yeah he’s gotta big frown,

cause de’ wind picked up and knocked his äss down,

Yeah, the roof o’dat KMart is goin’ on a spree!

Justa addin’ to the power of the flyin’ debris!

Well its’a howlin’ and a-wailin’ at de trailer park,

Yeah, it’s rainin’ sideways an its gettin’ real dark,

An the TV picture went an got all weird,

Cause my satelite dish has disapeared,

I’m tapin’ up my windows while I kin still see,

I don’ wanna share my bedroom with the flyin’ debris!

Well the ol’ widder Johnson just drove away,

But old man Morris has decided to stay,

He wuz out in the front yard, nailin’ up boards,

When de storm come along an’ blew away his Ford,

He was starin’ at the sight, amazed as you kin be,

As his Bronco joined the chorus of the flyin debris!

Yeah, I waited too long, it’s too late to go

    But I cain’t deny it’s a helluva show!

There was a flash o lightning and a terrible roar,

Now I live ten miles from where I did before,

Yea, dat Hurricane is a beatin’ on me,

Just’a whippin’ my äss with the flyin’ debris!

Dave is a poet, but doesn’t know it!

    His feet show it…

    They’re Longfellows
