ESG ratings are generally based more on how ESG issues impact the financial performance of the institution / fund rather than how well that investment performs with respect to ESG issues. For example, an ESG rating may consider how the risk of civil unrest due to oppression affects financial performance, rather than the institution’s behavior about supporting oppression. It’s difficult to find ESG rating systems that rate ESG performance rather than financial performance.
