Don’t know where Ben “lives”, but here in southern Wisconsin, we usually need to mow clear into the beginning of November. Well, at least toward the end of October.
I still mow my lawns every 3 day and need to because all the rain make the lawn keep growing…and growing and growing. I need to invest in a contract with a landscaping company.
I used my riding mower to mulch the leaves in the yard. First I let the dogs play on the leaf piles until the leaves start breaking up, then the mower makes the bits nice and small
We are on less than 60×100 – house was built in a sub-development in 1949 so everything property/house related is small. (Perfect size house though for the two of us.)
When we first bought the house in our 30s we could afford a gardener company so husband did not have to mow and along the way we turned most of the front of the house into a curved driveway across the front of the house which got rid of most of the front lawn (this was done for safety – we live on a 4 lane main road and it is next to impossible to back out – only time this is done is with our small RV and I have to stand in the road -in traffic – with a walkie-talkie tell him when it is okay to back out – quickly!)
When he quit his job in his 50s due to burn out we switched to the uncle of his secretary who was a gardener. He “sold us” a few years later to someone else – during one of the worst snow winters we had we found out that the fellow he sold us to had gone back “home” – leaving us with no one to clear the snow. By the next year we had found someone who would come/charge by the storm. One year there were a number of LARGE snowstorms and he stopped snow clearing for non-gardener clients the next year. Every place I called the the next year to find someone to clear the snow had the same response – “NO residential snow clearing – businesses only”. So in our 60s and not in the best of health we went back to clearing our own snow. Due to meds husband takes he is rather weak, so I do most of the clearing.
By magic after a storm a year ago someone appeared and helped us with their truck. That spring by coincidence husband agreed he could not deal with the grass. We hired the neighbor to our north’s gardener – turned out he was the fellow who had helped us out. So now he mows, etc and clears our snow and husband will not get sick from trying to do so – or feel terrible that I am doing most of the work.

My yard rake is the mower. The leaves are finely chopped and mulch into the ground, adding to the tilth and nutrients.
