Many people would prefer a comforting lie over an unpleasant truth.

My father couldn’t resist garage sales and flea markets. He bought a lot of what we considered “junk.” He said it was for “parts.” Whenever he felt somewhat depressed or had an argument withe my mother, he would go in the basement or garage and visit his “junk.”

Those things accumulated in his basement for decades. But when my parents got old and had to move to a condo, they had three big garage sales to get rid of his stuff. (It broke his heart, but it had to be done).

I was amazed at what people coming to the sales bought. Very little of the “junk” went unsold. Curious as to why people would buy such things, I asked why they wanted them. “I can use it for the ‘parts’,” they would say. And maybe they could.

It’s right more often than a broken clock, at least to Ernie.

A truly funny and evocative arc today. Great laugh because, in my case, it is a given that nothing goes until I decide I can’t find a use for it in the next decade. : )
