In my neighborhood, they disguise cell towers as other cell towers.

Cell towers aren’t as obnoxious as they used to be. Back in the old days, there were relatively few and they had to cover a big area. So, somewhere in the middle of Wyoming there was a 25,000 foot tower to serve the dozen of so subscribers in the state

Now that everyone and his or her kids and dogs have phones, we need a lot more towers. Each tower has to cover an area more densely packed with subscribers. Each tower has to cover a smaller range so it needs to be shorter. Also if the tower is too tall, it will interfere with other towers that use the same frequency.

So towers are now on the tops of buildings, on water towers or on existing towers that were originally too short for the purpose. Also, companies lease space on competitors’ towers.

It would not surprise me that in places like Manhattan, that a budling would have 4 towers on it: one on each corner, mounted at just above street level.

Some companies don’t even have towers; they lease blocks of airtime.

My dad would have loved today’s comic. We used to joke about the “evergreens” that wrapped cellphone towers in the mountains.

I’ve read that churches often lease their steeples for that purpose.

We have some ‘tree look-a-like’ cell towers in our neighborhood. They look silly. Nothing like a tree.

There’s one (poorly) disguised as an evergreen at a gas-station-and-convenience-store on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County. It’s a landmark we look for (and stop to use the restroom) on our way upstate to visit relatives.

In the state I live in, a middle school erected a huge sign with the name of the school. About 100 feet high. Turns out, it was funded by a cell phone company to hide their cell phone tower inside.
