Ford Prefect, a character in the book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy always carried a towel with him.

I would consider it a great book.

“Towel Day” is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe carry a towel in his honour.

taken from a discarded Dr. Who script and turned into Mr. Adams masterpiece of sci-fi satire, I do believe Caulfield hit the mark, however a bathrobe, perhaps?

He’s probably also got a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc.

Frazz is a Wakefield College Demon Deacon! I only know because of an Instagram account that does funny skits about how colleges got their mascots and nicknames.

The funny thing about the Hitchhiker’s Guide is that there are so many different versions of it, several BBC Radio plays, a BBC mini-series, and a movie all written by Adams. Leads one to believe that in the books universe the Question of the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything to which the answer is 42 was figured out leading to the universe resetting.

From the book:you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Further-more, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have “lost.” What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in “Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There’s a frood who really knows where his towel is.” (Sass: know, be aware of, meet,

I actually used that idea for a costume myself many years ago: a towel, a bathrobe and, of course, a copy of the book covered in a big home-brew dust jacket with “Don’t Panic” in large friendly letters on the cover.

from wikipedia: Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot (born 2 December 1999)4 is a Kenyan long-distance runner and the marathon world record holder. Kiptum is the only person in history to run the marathon in under two hours and one minute in a record-eligible race.Between December 2022 and October 2023, Kiptum ran three of the top six fastest marathons in history in less than a year. In doing so, he also set new Course Records in all three races he competed in.

I was surprised that Frazz wasn’t wearing the Kiptum costume but that probably would’ve been obvious and since Principle Spaetzle did do his virtual long trail hike that could be a nod to Kiptum as long distance runner.

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.-Douglas Adams
